What are you selling?

Use the cost before GST: the GST you paid on the purchase comes back as input credit. A guide only; confirm rates with your accountant.

Why the ₹2,500 line matters

A garment worth ₹2,500 or less is 5% GST; above that, 18%. The customer pays the GST, so a price just above the line costs the customer much more for little extra profit. A kurta costing ₹1,500 with an 80% margin sells for ₹2,700 before GST, ₹3,186 with GST. At ₹2,625 with GST (5%) the customer pays ₹561 less and your profit is ₹1,000 instead of ₹1,200. Often the lower price sells more and earns more.

Margin on cost vs margin on price

Shops usually think in margin on cost: a ₹1,000 piece sold at ₹1,600 before GST is 60% on cost. Your accountant sees margin on the selling price: ₹600 out of ₹1,600 is 37.5%. The calculator shows both. See also the GST calculator for clothes.

Questions shop owners ask

Should I count GST in my cost?

Use the cost before GST. If you are registered, the GST you pay on purchases comes back as input tax credit.

Why round to end in 9?

Prices like ₹1,299 look smaller to customers than ₹1,300. The calculator rounds up, so your margin never drops.

Is the slab checked on the MRP?

No. It is checked on the value without GST: with GST, a price up to ₹2,625 is 5%.
