Festival sale checklist for textile and clothing shops

Deepavali, Pongal and the wedding season bring a big share of a clothing shop's year in a few weeks. A rush goes smoothly when the work is done before it. Use this checklist.

Three weeks before

  • Count the stock, and fix the differences in the software.
  • Add the new stock with cost prices, sizes and colours.
  • Print stickers for every new piece (and check they scan).
  • Plan the offers: % off, buy 2 get 1, coupon codes, and set them up so they apply by themselves.
  • Check the GST rates and HSN codes on new items.

One week before

  • A login for every staff member, including temporary staff; a salesman card for each salesman.
  • Set the discount limit and the PIN for big discounts and returns.
  • Stock up on bill paper rolls (58 mm or 80 mm), labels and ribbons.
  • Test every printer, scanner and counter, and a phone as a spare counter.
  • Check that billing keeps working with the internet off.

On the day

  • Open with a counted cash float at each counter.
  • Hold bills for families still choosing, and serve the next customer.
  • Use split payment for part cash, part UPI.
  • Close with a day-end cash count: expected vs counted.

The week after

  • Compare sales with last year, by day and by hour.
  • See which sizes and designs sold out, and re-order them.
  • Run the dead stock report, and plan clearance (see clearing dead stock).
  • Thank regular customers: loyalty points or a gift voucher for the next visit.

Questions shop owners ask

How many counters do I need for the festival rush?

Look at the bills in your busiest hour last year and time a few bills at your counter. Add counters until the queue keeps moving, and keep a phone ready as a spare counter for peaks.

What if the internet stops during the sale?

With offline billing the counter keeps billing, and the bills are sent when the internet is back.
